02/27/2020

Who wants to splurge on skincare products that don't give you results? Some high-performance ingredients are chemically formulated or invented to give you these desired results,but do you know there are lots of these ingredients don't always originate from labs but rather, from nature? Here is one of them topping the list – Star Anise.

What is Star Anise and exactly what can it do for your complexion? Here, we tackle the five W's of this anti-aging and anti-imperfections miracle spice.

What is star anise?

Star Anise is commonly used in holiday-spiced Sangria recipes; however, the wonders that this miracle spice can do to your skin will amaze you. These star-shaped pods are spices made from the fruit of a kind of Chinese evergreen tree and belongs to the family of Chinese herbs and spices, which are the unsung heroes to health and nutrition.

From the ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic remedies to modern science, research shows that many of the active compounds in star anise are potent anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial antioxidants and free radical scavengers. Not only do they contain anti-inflammatory properties, but they also are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A, acting as a natural skin toner that actively tightens the skin.

Vitamin C plays a crucial role in collagen production leading to healthier looking skin, whereas vitamin A replenishes damaged skin cells, minimizing the appearance of scarring or stretch marks – both are strong antioxidants that reduce damage in skin cells caused by environmental aggressors (i.e. UV radiation, pollution).

Combining the anti-aging properties and the anti-bacterial effects, star anise helps control and combat those painful inflammations and onset of flare ups and pimples on your face.

Why do I need star anise?

Whether through consumption or applied topically on your skin, star anise contains numerous healing benefits including:

  • Smooths the skin;
  • Reduces dark marks;
  • Reduces free radicals;
  • Tightens the skin;
  • Anti-inflammatory (reducing pain and swelling of muscles and joints—rheumatoid arthritis);
  • Decreases body stress (reducing depression and anxiety symptoms);
  • Strong antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal;
  • Promotes healthy skin (good antimicrobial agent).

Who is star anise for?

Star anise is for anyone spotting the telltale signs of acne or aging, especially in the earliest stages: blemishes, pigmentation, uneven complexion, dullness or acne.

Who can't use star anise?

Great news – star anise is for everyone! Depending on your skin type, reaction and sensitivity, doses of anything natural and purely organic natural are safe for use. If you experience any skin irritations or side effects, talk to your dermatologist or doctor – perhaps star anise isn't the right ingredient for you, but that's okay!
